Global Problems Project
Inspiration
Young people around the world are taking action to raise awareness of global problems. Greta Thunberg is a teenage activist from Sweden. When she was 15 years old, she started a “school strike for the climate” and she protested outside the Swedish Parliament.
Greta Thunberg is not the only young person to take action about a global problem. Three teenagers from Pakistan are now fighting to save the city Lahore from air pollution. On November 4th, Laiba Siddiqi, Leila Alam and Misahel Hayat asked the court to declare the government’s smog policy “null and void” for being “illegal and unreasonable”. They want the government to make a new plan.
Stories such as these are very powerful, and people around the world are starting to take notice and take action. Our junior high school students were also inspired to learn more about global problems and think about what they can do to help.
Junior High School Presentations
Students spent ten lessons planning, researching and making presentations about various environmental and social problems. The topics they chose to present about were as follows:
- Air pollution (大気汚染)
- Desertification (砂漠化)
- Language extinction (危機に瀕する言語)
- Climate change / Global warming (地球の温暖化)
- Human trafficking (ヒューマン・トラフィック)
